Restaurant Review: Ponchikhana I recently visited Ponchikhana and had a decent dining experience. We ordered Kala Bhuna, Chicken Jhal Fry, and Rupchanda Fish, and overall, the food quality was good. The Kala Bhuna was flavorful and well-cooked, though it could have been a bit more tender. The Chicken Jhal Fry had a nice balance of spices, but it wasn’t as spicy as expected. The Rupchanda Fish was fresh and well-fried, though slightly on the oily side. The ambiance was okay—not too fancy but comfortable. Service was fairly prompt, though there were moments when we had to wait a bit longer than expected. Prices were reasonable for the portion sizes. Overall, Ponchikhana offers a good selection of dishes with decent flavors. It’s a nice spot for casual dining, though there’s room for slight improvements in service and preparation. Would recommend for those looking for a traditional meal at a fair price. Rating: 3.5/5
I have tried a few times. The best thing is Fresh Porota and Daal / Daal with Vegetables. I tried Shujir Halwa last time. I strongly recommend not to try. Their ventilation system needs to improve and Should have more sitting spaces. I recommend trying breakfast items.
So far I have tasted some of the snacks and sweets of them. The Kalojaam is good. Moglai is also very good and their best snack item. The puri is so so. Singara is also good. Chotpoti is not up to the mark and not recommended. Staff are really well behaved and provides great customer service. Hoping to go back taste some more of their items there.
I was in the area and whenever I’m in Whitechapel, I like to go into these shops and try some south Asian cuisine I don’t normally have. I had takeaway: lamb Biriani, an okra dish and mashed eggplant/aubergine dish. The staff were extremely friendly, they let me have half and half of some of the dishes so I could try them. Portions are very generous. It looks a little too small to sit inside. The biryani from here is probably one of the best I’ve ever had. The other dishes were delicious too.
I On a beautiful rain-soaked morning, I chose Panchkhana for breakfast. I went with paratha and kala bhuna. It was obvious the parathas had been reheated 2–3 times. The kala bhuna, for the price, lacked any special taste. Also, boneless kala bhuna would’ve looked and felt better. The salad was fresh and nicely done. Salad – 10/10 Paratha – 6/10 Kala Bhuna – 6/10 Service – 9/10
Traditional Bangladeshi food. Tasty treat for the palate. Parata and meat bhuna my go to. Large variety of dishes to choose from. Usually packed out with bengalis and a certain buzz about the place. Prices are up and flavours still hit the spot. Disappointed they could not provide tap water - no glasses. Only bottled water or canned drinks.
